Vance County Art Walk

Artist Participation Guidelines

Purpose

The Vance County Art Walk celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States by highlighting the people, places, and historical moments that shaped Vance County, North Carolina. This event invites artists of all ages to interpret local history through original handmade artwork while bringing the community together through the arts.

Eligibility

  • Open to all ages.
  • Open to individual artists, students, and community members.
  • Participants under 18 must have parent or guardian permission.
  • All skill levels are welcome.

Artwork Requirements

To be eligible for display, all artwork must meet the following criteria:

  1. Original Work
    • Artwork must be entirely original.
    • No copies, reproductions, or traced works of existing art.
    • Work must be created by the submitting artist.
  2. Handmade Only
    • Artwork must be hand-painted or hand-crafted.
    • Digital artwork, AI-generated art, printed designs, or digitally enhanced pieces are not permitted.
    • Acceptable mediums include, but are not limited to:
      • Painting (acrylic, oil, watercolor, etc.)
      • Drawing
      • Sculpture
      • Fiber art
      • Woodwork
      • Mixed media (non-digital)
  3. Historical Theme Requirement
    • Each artwork must reflect a historical event, historical figure, or significant moment connected to Vance County.
    • Examples may include:
      • Local civil rights history
      • Community leaders or notable residents
      • Historic buildings or locations
      • Cultural traditions or milestones
      • Events that shaped the county’s identity
    • Artists are encouraged to research local history and interpret it creatively.

Artwork Presentation

  • Artwork must be display-ready.
  • 2D work must be framed or securely mounted when possible.
  • Artwork should be stable and safe for public viewing.
  • Artists must include:
    • Title of artwork
    • Artist name
    • Age (optional for adults; required for youth categories if applicable)
    • Brief description (2 to 4 sentences) explaining the historical connection

Content Guidelines

  • Artwork must be appropriate for a family-friendly public setting.
  • Avoid offensive, discriminatory, or explicit imagery.
  • Respect historical subjects and community values.

The Arts Council reserves the right to decline work that does not meet event standards.

Display & Responsibility

  • Artwork will be displayed publicly as part of the Art Walk.
  • Artists retain ownership of their work unless otherwise agreed.
  • The Arts Council will take reasonable care but is not responsible for damage, loss, or theft.

Sales

  • Artists may choose to list artwork for sale.
  • Pricing must be clearly indicated at submission.
  • A percentage of sales may support the Arts Council, if applicable.

Participants must submit:

  • Artist registration form
  • Artwork information
  • Historical description statement
  • Agreement to event guidelines
